Time is almost up for a friend to fly free every time you fly this year.
The Southwest promo everyone is talking about is almost up.
Everyone thinks it’s an interesting deal or wants to know more but many don’t realize that there is a February deadline on this thing!
What deal!?
The Southwest companion pass promo:
Apply for one of their credit cards, (there are three options that apply) get approved and spend $4,000 in 3 months. Then get the pass for the rest of the year. (as long as you haven’t received a Southwest cardholder bonus in the last 24 months).
What’s a companion pass?
If you book a flight, a friend can fly with you FOR FREE. They need to be on the same flight as you, and you can only change said person 3 times in a year. You also need to pay the fees ($5.60 each way for domestic flights, it varies for international flights).
Whats the catch?
There really isn’t one. You do need to spend the $4k in 3 months and then you may have to wait up to 8 weeks to get the pass. So it is possible that you may only have the pass for 6 months. Still worth it!! Even one free flight would be worth the $69 fee on the lowest tier card If you use it wisely.
How do you spent $4,000 in 3 months while living paycheck to paycheck? Charge everything you do to the card. Charge every coffee, every dinner out, utility bills, gas, clothes, all of it. (If you can charge your rent to a credit card then you are lucky!) Make sure you can pay it off at the end of the month without accruing interest. If you have a spouse you can both use the card and contribute to paying it off. If you don’t or can’t spend $4,000 in 3 months and pay it off in time then this might not be a good promo for you. Consider this so that you don’t hurt your credit or finances. You’d need to spend and pay off $1,333/month.
Are there other perks?
Yes.
- 30,000 bonus points upon hitting the $4k in 3 months.
- 2x bonus points on Southwest purchases
- Lost luggage reimbursement
- Points don’t expire
the deadline is February 11, 2019.
